The definition of a jumper seems to depend on where you live. In some places, a jumper is a pullover sweater. In others, a jumper is a sleeveless dress worn over a blouse or sweater. At left is the dress kind of jumper.

Knee socks were ubiquitous when I was growing up - and sometimes uncomfortable because the elastic around the top could cut into the flesh. Getting the elastic just right - so that the socks stayed up but didn't hurt - was always a careful balancing act. One of the worst things that could happen at school was to have sagging knee socks.
