Lampshade
Dress Paul Poirot introduced the lampshade dress about 1913 as part of the Orientalism movement. The tunic was stiffened at the hem so that from the waist to the stiffened hem the tunic fell like a lampshade. I can't see what earthly use it was. If would be difficult and uncomfortable to sit in gracefully. And it could make from some interesting disasters on the dance floor. It was probably enough to make a hot blooded fellow think twice about asking the wearer to Tango. |

Dress The lingerie dress was a delicate invention of the Edwardians. It was made of very fine silk or cotton and magnificently decorated with ruching, tucks, pleats, and lace in every possible configuration. Amazingly for such delicate garments, many survive today; you can see them on any antique clothing site. They are well worth looking at for the workmanship as well as for their utter loveliness. |

of Mutton Sleeves, Leg-a-mutton Sleeves These sleeves come and go with fair regularity. They are wide at the shoulder and narrow sharply at the elbow to a tight wrist. Some variation or another was popular off and on throughout most of the nineteenth century. It cropped up again briefly in the 1970s. |
