Chiffon dress with chevron tiers and uneven hem, c. 1920, from The Roaring Twenties. Uneven Hem
This tiered dress from the 1920s uses an uneven hem to great effect. Earlier uneven hems were usually found on overskirts with even or trained hems on the underskirts.
Utility dress, 1948,combining plain and dotted frabics from Betty of the Gallant 1940s.

Utility Dress
The utility dress of the 1940s was an effort to be fashionable while conserving rationed fabric. Utitlity style garments had some, neat details and often used contrasting fabric for collars, cuffs and similar details - sometimes because sufficient lengths of the main fabric were unavailable.
